Although winter brings us sparkling lights and holiday vacations, it brings with it two very common illnesses: the flu and the common cold. It seems that just about everyone gets sick during these winters months, but by taking a few precautions, you can minimize your chances.

Get vaccinated

The most important step you can take toward preventing the flu is to get vaccinated. We recommend that everyone six months old and up gets the flu vaccine every year if they’re medically able. Yes, we mean every year.

Because the influenza virus mutates after each flu season, the vaccine changes annually. This essentially renders the previous year’s vaccine irrelevant. While there isn’t a vaccine for the cold, we can’t stress enough the importance of getting your annual flu vaccine.

Wash your hands

Wash your hands often. Cold and flu viruses are spread by infected people from sneezing, coughing, or blowing their nose. This is true whether or not they’re showing symptoms.

We recommend washing your hands after touching your face, before and after eating, after using the restroom, and after coming in contact with anyone who may be sick. In addition to just washing your hands, it’s a good idea to keep hand sanitizer with you for times you may not have access to a sink.

Sleep well

Exhaustion can have a serious impact on your immune system. If you’re feeling run down, not sleeping well, and over-stressed, you’re much more likely to get sick this holiday season. We know this time can be busy, but you should also remember to practice self-care, which absolutely includes getting plenty of rest and sleep.

Sleeping at least eight hours per night helps your body to rejuvenate from the day and rebuild your immune system to keep colds and flus away.

Avoid contact with sick people

It goes without saying, and it’s easier said than done, but minimizing your contact with people who’ve already contracted the flu or cold viruses can help to keep you healthy during the sick season.

Although you can’t hide away in your room for the next few months, you can try to minimize contact by avoiding large crowds, staying out of crowded elevators, and covering your hands and face as much as possible.

Eat well

A healthy body is a happy body. Keeping your body well-nourished gives a serious boost to your immune system. Eating foods rich in protein and vitamins C, D, and E can boost your immune system.

Likewise, make an effort to reduce your consumption of sugar, which impairs your immune system. A diet high in protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables is recommended to boost your immune system and live a healthy life.

Take supplements

If you find it difficult to get all of the recommended vitamins just through your diet, consider supplementing with a daily vitamin regimen. Multivitamins are best because they have each of the vitamins listed above, plus several more. At the very least, be sure you’re getting your daily recommended dose of Vitamins C, D, and E.

Listen to your body

Your body knows more than you probably realize. If you’re starting to feel weak, tired, or less than stellar, increase your water and healthy food intake while getting more rest. Expending energy when you don’t need to drains your immune system and makes you much more susceptible to the flu and cold viruses.
